Houndstooth Tales and Tails - The hilarity of everyday life

One thing that I love about living with dogs is that life is never dull.  Even sitting around and hanging out on the couch is more fun with a dog around to discuss TV shows with during the commercials.  If you want to share something with someone, they’re always happy and willing to oblige you.  Some of us get to experience life with drama thanks to certain dogs in our lives.  This is a story about one of those dogs.

As a pet parent, we have certain obligations, and one of those is in relation to their health.  This month, Flattery was due for her shots, so we made a late afternoon appointment and took her over this week.  While I was concerned about Flattery’s health and well-being, Mr. Taleteller was concerned about not getting a ticket from the county.  Regardless of the motivation, we had to get our girl over to the vet for her annual exam.

We went in and had a discussion with the vet about various issues and concerns we have as pertains to Flattery.  The vet we were meeting with is actually the son of the vet that owns the practice and the guy we usually see.  He’s a really nice guy who has a great bedside manners with his patients and while he doesn’t know everything yet, he’s very informed and really listens to you when you talk about issues you are having.  As he was taking Flattery to the back room to get her shots, I warned him that she is a drama queen and most likely would scream like she was dying when he gave her the shot.  He smiled and thanked us for the warning.

When he brought her back, he told us that he had distracted her with a liberal dosage of treats and that she’d only cried a little one time.  That was a lot better than I was expecting since the last time she got a shot she screamed loud enough that people from the front came to check on her.  She even seemed determined to work her charms on the vet and gave him a very gracious, “I forgive you” snuggle before coming over to stand with Mr. Taleteller.

I figured that was the end of the drama for our day.  Mr. Talteller put Flattery in the back seat, since Bunny wasn’t with us, so she would be within reach for us.  We went by Starbucks and got her a puppucino as a reward for her bravery and to make sure the outing ended on a pleasant experience.  While she lounged in the back seat, I was reminded of another of her quirks.  She lays down backwards, with her back towards the open part of the seat.  I’m not sure if this was for maximum, “I am not speaking to you” effect or if she just couldn’t figure out that turning around would make riding in the back seat more comfortable.

I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends

On the way home, we stopped at a local grocery store for a few things for dinner.  I waited in the car with Flattery while my husband went inside to get the necessary items.  I was playing a game on the phone when it suddenly happened.  Flattery began emitting the dreaded Greyhound Scream of Death and I turned to see the problem.  She’d decided to stand up, but had the clip to the seatbelt stuck to her toe.  I reached back and grabbed her leg to try to keep her from yanking it back and doing some damage.  She continued screaming and carrying on.

We wrestled for a minute, me trying to reach back between the seats, hold on to her leg and extricate her paw from the seatbelt clip.  I lost my grip, however, and she yanked her foot over.  The the clip just fell off.  I think it was just slightly stuck to her pad.  There was no mark, blood or sign of injury — besides the clearly wounded pride she was sporting.  In true Greyhound fashion, she laid down, her back to me and refused to look at me.  I’m not sure how the whole thing was my fault, but it clearly was.

Fortunately, when we got home Bunny wasn’t holding a grudge over being left behind.  She could not get close enough to me on the couch, and soon, Flattery couldn’t resist getting a little attention of her own.  All was soon forgiven and I was back in her good graces.  We’ll see how long I can stay there.  When you live with a drama queen, you never know where you’ll end up.
